Wax is produced naturally in the outer ear canal and serves as a self-cleaning agent for our ears.

It also has protective, lubricating and antibacterial properties helping to move foreign bodies and dirt out of the ear. It can be any colour from yellow, to bright orange, to dark brown. For some people who use cotton buds, or for those with smaller ear canals or downward sloping ear canals, this can affect the natural movement of the wax in the canal.

If the ear does become blocked with wax this can cause some unpleasant symptoms such as hearing impairment, earache and tinnitus.

Microsuction is one of the safest methods to clean the ear.

Your audiologist will look in your ear using a microscope. The microscope magnifies the ear, making it easier to assess and treat. A suction device is used to clean the ear without the use of water. The gentle suction device works in a similar way to a vacuum cleaner and although it can be quite noisy, it is quick and painless. All our audiologists have undergone additional training and are qualified in microsuction earwax removal, so you can be certain to receive the highest standard of care
